AI: The Somnium Files is an adventure, puzzle, and visual novel game from Spike Chunsoft. Set in November 2019, it follows special agent Kaname Date as he investigates the New World serial killings after the discovery of Shoko Nadami's body at an abandoned amusement park.

Date works alongside Aiba, an artificial intelligence partner embedded in his left eye. Their investigation moves between interviews and crime-scene searches in reality, then ventures into the subconscious minds of witnesses and suspects to pursue concealed memories and leads.

Investigation and Psync

The game is divided between Investigation and Somnium sequences. During investigations, Date examines locations, speaks with characters, and collects information that can clarify the case. Aiba can point out areas of interest and contribute observations as the pair follows the evidence.

Dream-world puzzles

Somnium sections begin when Date uses the Psync Machine to enter another person's dream. These strange mental landscapes contain environmental puzzles and symbolic actions, with every decision using part of a limited amount of time. The choices made in these sequences can open different routes through the narrative.

Branching mystery

Different decisions lead to multiple story paths and endings. Progress depends on connecting clues from the investigation with the unusual logic of the Somniums, while the larger mystery gradually reveals the deceptions and past events surrounding the killings.
