04 About Eastward

Eastward is an action role-playing game from Chucklefish, released for Nintendo Switch on September 16, 2021. Its adventure follows John, a quiet and powerful digger, and Sam, a young girl with unusual abilities.

The pair leave their underground home of Potcrock Isle after Sam finds a glowing seed, setting out across a colorful world shaped by an earlier catastrophe. Their journey leads through settlements and decaying locations as they meet new people and investigate the mysteries surrounding the world's ruin.

Two heroes, shared challenges

John and Sam are controlled as a team, with switching between them playing an important role in exploration, combat, and environmental puzzles. John uses weapons including his frying pan and a shotgun, while Sam can use her powers to stun enemies and clear hazards.

Exploration and combat

The adventure combines real-time battles with puzzle-solving across pixel-art towns, abandoned factories, and other locations. Players can search areas for hidden paths, chests, ingredients, and components, while conversations with NPCs can provide quests, lore, and lighter moments.

Cooking and upgrades

Ingredients found during the journey can be turned into meals that restore health and provide temporary effects. Components can also be used to improve John's weapons and equipment, offering additional support for more demanding encounters.
