Valkyria Chronicles is a tactical role-playing game from Sega, released for Nintendo Switch on October 16, 2018. Set on the continent of Europa during the Second Europan War, it follows the neutral nation of Gallia as it becomes a target in the conflict between the Eastern Europan Imperial Alliance and the Atlantic Federation.

College student Welkin Gunther and baker Alicia Melchiott join Gallia's militia as members of Squad 7. Their campaign against Imperial forces combines the broader struggle for Gallia with personal stories shaped by courage, sacrifice, prejudice, and perseverance.

Gallia at War

Squad 7 faces invading Imperial troops while seeking answers about the Valkyria, an ancient people associated with immense power. The story also introduces Imperial leaders Maximilian and Selvaria Bles, whose connection to the Valkyria places them at the center of Gallia's fight.

BLiTZ Combat

Battles use the BLiTZ combat system, which combines turn-based planning with direct real-time control of selected units. Command Points determine how many actions can be taken in a turn, while an overhead tactical map supports planning across each battlefield. Positioning, enemy placement, terrain, and defensive cover all influence the outcome of a skirmish.

Squad Roles and Development

Players deploy distinct unit classes, including Scouts, Shocktroopers, Lancers, Engineers, and Snipers. Each role serves a different purpose, from reconnaissance and base capture to anti-tank attacks and long-range fire. Characters also have individual Potentials that may help or hinder them in combat. Between missions, headquarters activities allow soldiers to train and new weapons to be researched.

Canvas-Style Presentation

The game presents its wartime setting with a canvas-inspired visual style resembling a moving watercolor illustration. Its tactical encounters pair this distinctive look with commander Orders, which can provide battlefield benefits or enable powerful actions when used at key moments.
