SteamWorld Dig 2 is an action, adventure, platforming, and puzzle game from Image & Form, released for Nintendo Switch on September 21, 2017. It follows Dorothy, a steambot searching for her missing friend Rusty after he disappears near a mining town.

Her search takes her beneath the surface, where strange tremors, ancient myths, and secrets connected to the fate of the Steambots await. The underground world is built around discovery, with hidden routes, caves, rewards, and distinct biomes to uncover.

Digging and exploration

Dorothy creates her own paths through dirt and rock with her pickaxe. Mining yields gems and minerals that can be sold in town, while deeper exploration reveals new areas, hidden spaces, and environmental puzzles. Returning to earlier locations after gaining new equipment can open routes that were previously unreachable.

Tools and upgrades

Loot gathered below can be used to improve Dorothy's gear and abilities. Her growing toolset includes a hookshot, jetpack, explosives, and steam-powered abilities that use water. Pickaxe and bag upgrades support more efficient mining, while lamp oil and water must be managed during trips underground.

Challenges below the town

The mines contain rock-dwelling enemies as well as puzzles that require careful use of Dorothy's equipment. Different underground biomes bring their own visual styles and obstacles, encouraging players to balance combat, platforming, mining, and resource planning as they descend.
