13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is an adventure and simulation game from SEGA, released for Nintendo Switch on April 12, 2022. Its story follows thirteen high school students in 1980s Japan whose lives become connected through Sentinels, kaiju attacks, and time travel.

The game presents its science-fiction mystery through multiple character viewpoints. As events and revelations overlap, players assemble the wider picture from the students' personal conflicts, relationships, and encounters with an approaching threat.

A nonlinear narrative

The story is told in a non-linear format, moving between different protagonists rather than following a single path. Each perspective contributes new details to the central mystery, with conversations, discoveries, alliances, and betrayals adding context to the larger events.

Remembrance exploration

In the Remembrance segments, players explore 2D locations and interact with people and objects to uncover story threads. Dialogue and keywords provide information about the characters and the world, making these sections central to understanding the narrative.

Destruction battles

Destruction shifts the focus to real-time strategic combat. Players command Sentinels in top-down battles against waves of kaiju while defending humanity's remaining strongholds. The Sentinels have different combat roles and abilities, encouraging a mix of melee, ranged, flight, defensive, and support options.

Upgrades and preparation

Successful operations reward meta-chips that can be used to improve Sentinels and their pilots. Preparing a balanced team, managing resources, and using offensive, defensive, repair, buff, and debuff abilities are important when facing stronger enemy waves.
