Darkest Dungeon is a gothic role-playing game from Red Hook Studios, released for Nintendo Switch in 2018. As the heir to a blighted ancestral estate, you must lead expeditions into corrupted grounds and uncover the consequences of an ancestor’s search for forbidden knowledge.

The journey leads through dangerous locations surrounding the Hamlet, where grotesque enemies, traps, dwindling supplies, and mounting fear make every venture uncertain. Your ultimate objective is to confront the evil waiting within the Darkest Dungeon itself.

Tactical battles under pressure

Combat is turn-based and depends on careful party placement, targeted attacks, and the distinct abilities of each hero class. Building an effective group means considering damage, healing, stress relief, and the ability to reach enemies in different positions. Mistakes carry lasting consequences because fallen adventurers are gone permanently.

Stress as a battlefield threat

Heroes do not merely lose health. Combat, traps, and disturbing discoveries raise their stress, potentially causing harmful afflictions, erratic behavior, or heart attacks. Light levels, provisions, and retreat decisions all influence the risk of an expedition, making survival as much a psychological challenge as a tactical one.

The Hamlet between expeditions

The Hamlet serves as the base for recruiting and maintaining a roster of imperfect heroes. Facilities including the Blacksmith, Guild, Sanitarium, Abbey, and Tavern can be used to improve equipment and skills, address negative quirks, and reduce stress. Managing these resources is central to sustaining a party through increasingly dangerous dungeons.
