Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a platformer developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo. Released for Nintendo Switch on May 4, 2018, it sends Donkey Kong and his allies on a journey to take back Donkey Kong Island from the invading Snowmads.

After the island is frozen and the Kongs are blown away from home, Donkey Kong travels across five islands with Diddy, Dixie, and Cranky Kong. Their goal is to overcome the Snowmads and their leader, Lord Fredrik, and restore the island.

Platforming across varied islands

The adventure uses 2.5D side-scrolling stages filled with enemies, hazards, hidden routes, and collectibles. Players jump, roll, swim, and explore environments including jungles and underwater areas, while mine cart and Rocket Barrel stages provide faster reflex-based challenges.

Kong partner abilities

Donkey Kong can travel with Diddy, Dixie, or Cranky, whose abilities help address different obstacles. Diddy provides a jetpack hover, Dixie uses a helicopter-style spin for added reach, and Cranky can bounce on spikes with his cane. Partner meters also enable Kong-POW moves that can clear enemies or expose hidden items.

Funky Mode

The Nintendo Switch version includes Funky Mode, which lets players use Funky Kong. His movement options include a double jump and hovering, alongside extra hearts and unlimited underwater breathing, offering a more forgiving way to progress through the adventure.
