FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water is a 2021 adventure game from Koei Tecmo for Nintendo Switch. Set around Mount Hikami, its supernatural mystery follows a location marked by spiritual phenomena, disappearances, and a tragic ritual history.

The narrative is told through Yuri Kozukata, Ren Hojo, and Miu Hinasaki. Yuri can trace those who have vanished, Ren investigates the mountain’s legends, and Miu searches for her missing mother as their separate paths reveal the sorrow and danger surrounding Mount Hikami.

Exploring Mount Hikami

Players investigate isolated areas including shrines and forests, searching for clues, key items, documents, photographs, and ghost records. Environmental puzzles and discoveries gradually expose the mountain’s past, including failed shrine-maiden rituals intended to contain the entity known as the Black Water.

Camera Obscura encounters

Ghosts are confronted with the Camera Obscura, a camera that damages and purifies spirits through photographs. Timing shots during a Fatal Frame moment, when an enemy is vulnerable, can deal greater damage. Different film types and equipped lenses provide further tactical options, including effects that can heal, slow enemies, or increase damage.

Wetness and character abilities

A wetness system affects the risk of exploration: becoming soaked causes ghosts to appear more often and inflict more damage, while also strengthening the Camera Obscura. Purification items can reduce wetness. Yuri’s Shadow Reading ability is used to follow traces left by missing people and investigate past events.
