Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is a role-playing game from Square Enix, released for Nintendo Switch on September 3, 2019. This updated edition revisits the story of Squall Leonhart, a reserved SeeD cadet at Balamb Garden whose early rivalry develops into a far larger conflict.

Squall joins fellow students including Zell and Selphie as missions for the mercenary force SeeD uncover a threat tied to sorceresses, the past, and the future. The narrative centers on connections between the party, love, destiny, and personal growth.

Junction-Based Character Building

Its progression system is built around Junctioning. Characters can equip Guardian Forces to improve their statistics and gain abilities, while magic can be assigned to attributes for further customization. Guardian Force abilities also open additional ways to shape each character’s skills and combat role.

Drawing and Refining Magic

Rather than purchasing magic in the usual way, spells are collected by drawing them from enemies and environmental draw points. Magic can also be created through item-refining abilities. This makes spell stocks an important part of party planning as well as battle preparation.

Battles and Limit Breaks

Combat includes powerful Limit Break attacks that become available when characters are at critical health, with different attacks for different party members. The remastered version also offers options to accelerate battles or disable encounters, allowing players to adjust the pace of exploration and combat.

Triple Triad

Triple Triad is the game’s strategic card mini-game. Playing and winning cards can provide rare items, which may be refined into magic or other useful resources through Guardian Force abilities.
