Mario Tennis Aces is a Nintendo Switch sports game developed by Camelot and published by Nintendo. Released on June 22, 2018, it turns tennis matches into quick, tactical contests featuring a roster of familiar Mario characters with distinct strengths.

Beyond standard rallies, every match centers on placement, timing, charged returns, and careful use of an energy gauge. Players can choose characters suited to power, speed, defense, tricky play, or balanced all-around performance.

Adventure Mode

The game includes an Adventure Mode in which Mario enters a local tournament alongside Luigi and Toad. When Luigi becomes possessed by the ancient racket Lucian, Mario travels through different courts to face possessed opponents and tennis-based boss challenges. The mode introduces techniques and lets Mario improve his abilities while working toward rescuing Luigi.

Shots and Special Techniques

Players can use topspin, slice, flat, lob, and drop shots, with charged swings adding greater force. Zone Speed temporarily slows time to help reach difficult returns, while Zone Shots allow precise targeting of vulnerable court areas. Trick Shots can cover long distances and restore energy, but their use requires good timing.

Energy and Racket Strategy

Rallies and successful Trick Shots build the energy gauge used for advanced moves. A full gauge can support powerful options such as a character-specific Special Shot. Blocking these attacks can damage a racket, and losing all rackets results in a K.O., making defensive decisions an important part of each match.

Character Variety

Each character belongs to a play style category, including All-Around, Powerful, Speedy, Tricky, and Defensive. Learning how a chosen character handles court coverage, shot power, and recovery can shape the approach to every opponent.
