Payday 2 places players in the role of a masked career criminal working with the Payday Gang across Washington, D.C. Rather than following one linear campaign, the game is structured around jobs and contracts that grow more demanding as the crew pursues wealth and notoriety.

Heists range from smaller robbery jobs to major bank vault break-ins. Each assignment presents objectives, security concerns, civilian control, and police resistance, requiring players to decide how to handle the situation.

Plan the heist

Jobs can be approached quietly or with direct force. A stealth-focused plan involves avoiding detection, managing security, and keeping civilians under control, while a loud approach turns the operation into a firefight against responding law enforcement. Objectives and enemy reactions can change the flow of a mission.

Work as a crew

The game supports cooperative heists for up to four players. Successful jobs rely on coordinating roles, discussing strategy, prioritizing objectives, and adapting when plans fall apart. Learning maps, escape routes, patrol patterns, and useful defensive positions can help a crew manage both stealth attempts and intense combat.

Build a criminal specialist

Players earn cash and experience from completed work, unlocking upgrades through skill trees along with weapons, equipment, perks, and weapon modifications. Different builds and loadouts can be adjusted to suit a particular heist, personal approach, or team role. Masks provide an additional way to define a criminal persona.

Developed and published by Starbreeze AB, Payday 2 was released for Nintendo Switch on February 27, 2018. It is available in Europe and the USA, with language options including English, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian.
