Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is a role-playing roguelike released for Nintendo Switch in 2024. Shiren and his weasel companion Koppa travel to the mysterious Serpentcoil Island after hearing of a deity at its summit that can grant any wish.

The path upward leads through dangerous Mystery Dungeons that change from expedition to expedition. Survival depends on careful movement, tactical combat, resourceful item use, and the willingness to learn from failed attempts.

A changing island ascent

Serpentcoil Island is filled with perilous dungeons, hidden secrets, traps, monsters, bosses, secret passages, and valuable artifacts. Randomly generated layouts mean each journey presents a different arrangement of rooms, corridors, dangers, and discoveries as Shiren searches for the route to the summit.

Turn-based dungeon strategy

Every movement and attack takes a turn, making positioning and planning central to exploration. Weapons, shields, scrolls, staves, pots, and other items can offer vital advantages, though many have unknown properties until identified. Hunger also needs attention, while corridors can provide safer opportunities for one-on-one encounters.

Risk, allies, and recovery

Defeat inside a dungeon sends Shiren back to the starting village without the items carried on that run. This permadeath structure gives equipment decisions and escapes added weight. Temporary allies can join the journey, and environmental hazards may be avoided or used strategically when confronting difficult situations.
