The Long Dark is a survival-focused adventure from Hinterland Studio, released for Nintendo Switch on September 17, 2020. Set after a mysterious geomagnetic event causes modern technology to fail, it places survival against cold, isolation, and the wilderness at the center of the experience.

Players take the role of bush pilot Will Mackenzie after a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. The game combines a narrative journey with demanding resource management, where food, water, shelter, warmth, and careful choices are vital.

Wintermute story mode

The episodic Wintermute campaign follows Mackenzie as he searches for his estranged wife, Astrid, following the crash. Along the way, he crosses hazardous landscapes, meets other survivors, and learns more about the silent disaster that changed the world.

Survival in the wilderness

Exploration takes place across interconnected Canadian wilderness regions from a first-person perspective. Hunger, thirst, fatigue, body temperature, and health need constant attention, while blizzards, fog, changing weather, and the day-night cycle create additional pressure.

Resources, crafting, and wildlife

Scavenged supplies and natural materials can be used for food, water, fuel, clothing, tools, and repairs. Wolves and bears present further danger, requiring players to decide whether to avoid, confront, or retreat from wildlife encounters.

Sandbox survival

Beyond its story campaign, The Long Dark includes Sandbox mode for open-ended survival in different regions. Its focus remains on planning ahead, conserving valuable items, maintaining equipment, and finding safe shelter before the conditions worsen.
