Variable Barricade is an adventure visual novel released for Nintendo Switch in 2022. Published and developed by Aksys Games, it follows Hibari Tojo, an independent young woman from a wealthy family whose grandfather abruptly arranges for her to live with four possible husbands.

Determined to avoid marriage, Hibari must contend with the bachelors' personalities, histories, and advances while learning what each of them truly wants. The premise combines romantic comedy, family pressure, drama, and branching character stories.

Hibari's unexpected arrangement

Hibari is placed in a lavish villa with four men selected by her grandfather. Among them are a gambler and a man carrying debt, and each suitor brings his own eccentricities and personal circumstances. As Hibari resists the arrangement, the story reveals more about the men and the reasons behind their situations.

Choices and character routes

Progression centers on reading dialogue and choosing Hibari's responses at key moments. Decisions affect her relationships and guide the narrative toward different character routes and endings. The game includes romantic outcomes as well as a non-romantic option, encouraging players to explore alternate paths.

Presentation and extra scenes

Sub-events and character interactions provide additional details about the cast and their backstories. Character sprites, background art, and voice performances for the main characters support the story's comedic and emotional moments.
