Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom and published by NIS America for Nintendo Switch. It follows adventurer Adol Christin after he is imprisoned in Balduq, a large city under Romun Empire control.

A meeting with the mysterious Aprilis changes Adol into a Monstrum, granting him supernatural powers. Alongside other Monstrums, he confronts creatures tied to the Grimwald Nox dimension while seeking the truth behind their transformations and the secrets concealed throughout the city.

Explore the city of Balduq

Balduq is built for movement and discovery. Monstrum Gifts allow the party to traverse its districts in unusual ways, including wall-running, gliding, grappling, and short-distance teleportation. These abilities open routes to hidden passages, chests, lore entries, side quests, and other areas beyond the main path.

High-speed party combat

Combat uses real-time action and lets players change between Monstrum companions with different fighting styles, elemental attacks, and combat roles. Skills consume SP, which can be restored through normal attacks, while the Extra Skill gauge supports stronger techniques. Enemy encounters and boss battles reward careful use of each character’s strengths.

Defend against the Grimwald Nox

The party faces shadowy threats emerging from Grimwald Nox in dimensional battles connected to Balduq’s defense. Timing also matters during regular combat: Flash Guard can nullify incoming damage and create a critical attack opportunity, while Flash Move slows time after a well-timed dodge.
