River City Saga: Three Kingdoms brings the Kunio-kun cast into a playful version of China’s Three Kingdoms period. Kunio assumes the role of Guan Yu, while characters including Riki and Misako are recast as figures from the era as they confront warlords and seek to unite the land.

Released for Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2022, this action-focused adventure combines arcade fighting and role-playing progression with a comic reinterpretation of historical events. Arc System Works developed and published the game.

Side-Scrolling Combat

The adventure centers on side-scrolling brawls against groups of enemies. Kunio and his allies use familiar fighting techniques alongside special moves, combo attacks, weapons, and items. Boss encounters pit the party against warlords drawn from the Three Kingdoms setting, while different fighting styles can help address varied opponents.

Character Growth and Allies

Experience earned through battle allows characters to level up, improve their stats, and gain additional abilities. Players can recruit and manage allies with their own skills, then experiment with equipment, upgrades, and character builds while progressing through the campaign.

Ancient China to Explore

The game’s map spans locations such as cities and battlefields. Exploration can reveal side quests, hidden secrets, mini-games, optional battles, and useful resources beyond the main route. Local cooperative play also lets a second player join the action.
